Amsterdam Fund for the Arts
The Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK) invests in the arts which enriches the experience of life in the city of Amsterdam. The AFK encourages the quality, dynamism and diversity of the arts in Amsterdam, and contributes to the city's strong and richly varied cultural climate. The fund is available to all disciplines within the cultural sector, for cultural organizations and artists. The AFK supports both experimentation and proven quality, established organizations and those that are relatively new, the professional arts and amateur arts - from every district of the city.
For the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts we initiated extensive research on diversity in the cultural sector. Novel and the AFK together concluded that the cultural sector in Amsterdam does not resemble the demographics of the city. Institutions acknowledge this inadequacy, but their individual effort remains insufficient. The most important research question is how cultural institutions can be opened up for all people of Amsterdam. Novel aspires to set up a ‘multi-cultural connector’, bridging the gap between institutions and a diverse group of young cultural professionals.
To progress the feasibility for such a project, Novel interviewed an array of institutions and individuals active in the cultural sector of Amsterdam. Amongst them were the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, the Stedelijk Museum and Imagine IC. We currently presented the results to the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. Novel and the AFK are now in consultation on the following steps to concretise the connector.
